Sunapee itinerary scene

Weekend itinerary

Two nights in Sunapee: harbor, lake, and mountain

Arrive for a harbor walk and dinner, give Saturday's clearest weather to a cruise or boat day, then use Sunday for Mount Sunapee, the state beach, or a shorter Sugar River history loop.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Sunapee unfolds from the harbor outward: one lake day, one mountain or beach half-day, and the Sugar River close at hand.

Best length

2 nights

Arrive Friday for the harbor, give Saturday's best conditions to the lake, and keep Sunday for Mount Sunapee, the state beach, or the Sugar River walk.

Stay

Follansbee Inn

A lakeside country inn pairs an intimate scale with a peaceful waterfront setting.

Main activity

Lake Sunapee, Sunapee Harbor, and Mount Sunapee

Give Lake Sunapee the best weather, then let the harbor, Sugar River, and Mount Sunapee fill the shorter windows.

Pace

Harbor, lake, then mountain

Keep one full day open for the lake and use the arrival and departure windows for the harbor, mountain, beach, or river trail.

Friday

Arrive in Sunapee Harbor and walk before dinner.

Park near the harbor, follow the Sugar River toward the Livery and dam, then return for a simple meal without adding another long drive.

Saturday

Give the clearest day to Lake Sunapee.

Choose a narrated cruise, a rental, or a carefully planned launch. Leave room for the lighthouses, shoreline, and a dry-clothes pause before dinner.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return for dry clothes before dinner.

A short pause keeps a windy boat day or mountain outing from turning dinner into the next piece of logistics.

Sunday

Choose Mount Sunapee, the beach, or a shorter history loop.

Use the last half-day for one setting: the mountain and state park in Newbury, or the museum and river trail back at the harbor.
